Jon Gray is glad he has to do this and Corey Kluber is disappointed that he has
to do this, but they both have the same job in game 7. But Gray gets tagged early,
as Choi, Belt and Stanton all homer in the 1st. Two walks and two singles later
Gray is out of the game having thrown just 30 pitches, getting just one out and now
down 4. Taylor Rogers comes in with the bases loaded and gets exactly what he needs
though, as Diaz taps back to him and he starts the 1-2-3 DP to end the inning and
the threat. And sure enough the DBacks pay him back and get those runs right back in
the top of the 2nd, with a 4 run rally bookended by a Devers triple and a Muncy HR.
Moncada leads off the 3rd with a double and Kluber is out of the game too. But Poche
can't do what he's supposed to, as he serves up three straight hits and two HRs to LH
batters, putting Milwaukee in an 8-4 hole. A second Stanton HR with two on in the 4th
then closes the gap to a run. The bullpens continue to throw zeroes but the Brewers
get something going in the 7th when J.D. Davis singles with one out and pinch runner
Nick Madrigal ends up on third after a stolen base where Posey bounced his throw into
center field. But Little G Urshela can't cash him in, hitting a weak grounder to 3B
that Madrigal apparently had almost no chance on. Chapman breezes through the 8th and
Doolittle comes in in the bottom of the inning to face the top of the Brewers' order
and get the Dbacks 3 outs closer to the next round. But pinch hitter Renato Nunez
muscled one into the outfield and then Springer followed up with a single through the
right side, with pinch runner Tony Kemp sliding safely into 3B as the tying run with
none out. Brandon Belt stepped up but could only manage a weak grounder to Lemahieu,
who threw out a hung up Kemp at the plate. So Stanton stepped to the plate with two
men on and two HRs on the day, and launched the first thing he liked from a tired
Doolittle far over the fence in CF, putting the Brewers ahead by 2! Jairo Diaz came
in to close out the game and got two quick outs before fumbling an Upton grounder and
walking Devers. Dahl stepped to the plate as the go-ahead run and hit one deep to CF
that Springer went back for, went right to the wall and came down with the ball with
his back to the plate, ending the game and clinching the series for the Brewers
Milwaukee 10, Arizona 8

While many batters on both sides hit well in this series after game 7 there was really
no question as to who the MVP was. It's the big fellow who hit 3 HRs (5 in the series)
and 7 RBIs (15!) and carried this team on his enormous back into the next round. But
there were actually 5 other Brewers who hit 3 HRs as the team averaged over 3 HRs per
9 for the series. For Arizona Rafael Devers and Jorge Polanco were listed all over this
recap and gave me tons of problems. Yoan Moncada hit well too but made 3 errors. And I
couldn't do anything against Taylor Rogers.
Thanks to Jake for a great series that was tons of fun and congratulations to him on a
great season as well, he really pushed me to the limit with a very strong team that had
already done great work just to win the division. I don't think he expected that he'd
hit 15 HRs in 7 games and still get outhomered by 6! Damn thing was just flying out of
the yard.
