Game 6: Cleveland's Kyle Hendricks (19-5, 3.17) at Minnesota's Robbie Ray (16-7, 3.09)
The series shifts back to Minneapolis with the Twins' backs against the wall and trotting
out Robbie Ray, a starter who had allowed the Indians seven runs in 4.1 innings in Game 2.
Ray walks Ronald Acuna Jr. and Gleyber Torres, gets two loud lineouts, a single lined to
left by Carlos Correa and a walk to Max Kepler ... and gets the hook, meaning the bullpen
will be saddled with at least 8.1 more innings on top of the 16.1 from the previous three
games. David Bednar comes on and gets the final out to leave the score 1-0, and the game is
tied after one with Brett Gardner's leadoff triple and Marcus Semien's one-out grounder.
The Twins go up 2-1 in the bottom of the third on Nate Lowe's two-out walk and Semien's RBI
double. Cleveland ties it in the sixth on Hunter Renfroe's leadoff double off Julio Urias,
moving to third on a wild pitch. Correa drives him in with a grounder to second.
Minnesota takes a 3-2 lead in the seventh, starting the inning with three singles and Brett
Gardner's sacrifice fly, but can't push anything further across as the Tribe uses four
relievers in the inning. In the next inning, Cleveland gets a leadoff walk from Renfroe and
Correa's infield single. Drake Britton relieves Diego Castillo and strikes out Max Kepler,
but Willson Contreras lines a single to right to score Renfroe, while he and Correa advance
to scoring position on RF David Bote's throwing error. With the platoon edge, Britton walks
Jake Lamb to load the bases, then without the edge strikes out Brian Anderson for the second
out but walks Ronald Acuna Jr. to push Correa across with the go-ahead run. He does strike out
Gleyber Torres to end the threat.
Minnesota does get a one-out single in the eighth from Jackie Bradley Jr. that came to naught.
Twins usual starter Chris Paddack, who departed Game 5 early, takes one for the pen and pitches
the ninth, throwing the ball away on a first-pitch comebacker that allowed J.T. Realmuto to
get to second, but then retires the side with two strikeouts. In the bottom half, Indians closer
Joe Jimenez hits leadoff man Bote with a pitch, then gets a flyout from Gardner. Jamie McCann
grounds a double down the third-base line, and Bote steams home in a bid to tie the game but
is thrown out by Renfroe. Semien walks and then Moustakas walks, and with the bases loaded and
Jimenez's pitch count up, the closer starts Tommy Pham with two balls, gets two fouls, and then
a swinging strike to end the series. Indians win 4-3, win series 4-2.
Tough series for the Twins. Five of the six games were close, they got only 18.2 innings out of
their starters (and needed 33.1 from their bullpen) -- never seen anything like that in the
postseason. Despite that, their pen pitched very well (9 ER, 2.43 ERA). The Tribe did seem to
get the breaks and the bigger hits in the final two games after the series was tied 2-2, and
sometimes that's all it takes. It would have been interesting had it gone to a Game 7 with
presumably Gallen going for the Twins and the bullpen running on fumes, but I'm glad it didn't.
Dave is always a tough out but he's one of my favorite Netplay opponents and I'm glad we're
division opponents again.
