Game 5: Minnesota's Chris Paddack (15-7, 3.54) at Cleveland's Justin Verlander (15-3, 3.53)
Justin Verlander's career playoff record? 3-8, 4.66 ERA, including the series opener where
the Twins tagged him with five earned runs and the loss. Small sample size and all, but not
the dominating figure who has a 213-165 career record and more CFA wins with one team than
anyone except Atlanta's Clayton Kershaw (233). Verlander changed the narrative at home in
Game 5, allowing three hits in 6.2 shutout innings and striking out 13. Early solo homers by
Gleyber Torres and Carlos Correa and an RBI single from Brian Anderson put the Indians up 3-0
in the second. Minnesota doesn't manage more than one baserunner in any inning until the eighth,
when Ty France singled off Richard Lovelady and pinch-hitter James McCann homered, cutting the
lead to 3-2 with no outs. Rookie Kodi Whitley comes on and gets three outs, and Joe Jimenez
enters in the ninth and works around a one-out walk to Mike Moustakas and a grounder moving him
to second before Jackie Bradley Jr. strikes out to end the game. Tough note for the Twins: Starter
Chris Paddack left with an injury in the bottom of the second, stretching a bullpen that had gone
seven innings the day before and three the day before that. Indians 3-2, lead series 3-2.
