Two longtime rivals who dueled all season atop the AL Central met up in one ALDS to see who
would advance to the ALCS and, more importantly, establish bragging rights as the Cleveland
Indians (99-63) met the Minnesota Twins (106-99). The season series finished 9-7, Twins.
Game 1: Cleveland's Justin Verlander (15-3, 3.53) at Minnesota's Chris Paddack (15-7, 3.54)
The Tribe jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Max Kepler's homer drives in Gleyber
Torres, who walked against the Twins' Chris Paddack. Paddack has started his career on a tear,
going 29-9 in his first two CFA seasons. Minnesota tied it up with solo runs in the next two
innings, on a homer by Marcus Semien and Jackie Bradley's sacrifice fly, which drove in Tommy
Pham, who had tripled to lead off the second. The teams went back and forth the next three
innings, with Cleveland getting a couple of RBI groundouts and Minnesota a two-run homer from
Pham, leaving the score tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Nate Lowe led off with
a walk, bringing on a series of relievers for Cleveland. After Richard Lovelady walked Mike
Moustakas, Lou Trivino induced a popout from the dangerous Pham before wild-pitching the
runners along to second and third. Jackie Bradley Jr. was intentionally walked to load the
bases, and Mitch Moreland came on to pinch-hit. Alex Claudio countered, and the Twins pulled
Moreland back for David Bote, who hit a sacrifice fly to Hunter Renfroe in left to score Lowe.
Cleveland went quietly as Twins relievers pitched three perfect innings to end it. Twins 5-4,
lead series 1-0.
