Game 1
Blake Snell (13-7, 4.24 ERA) takes on Houston ace Jake deGrom (15-5, 3.38 ERA) in the opener.
And in the first few innings, it's all about the pitching.
1st: deGrom retires the side in order in the first. Snell racks up 2 Ks.
2nd: deGrom works out of a mini jam with a DP. Snell racks up 2 Ks.
3rd: deGrom allows the leadoff guy to get on but slams the door with 2 Ks of his own. Snell
allows a couple of hits and Houston plates a runner, but Snell Ks 3 and puts out the fire.
4th: 1-2-3 for deGrom. And this is where things go sideways for Snell and the Cardinals.
With the Astros leading 1-0, Joyce leads off with a HR. A few batters later, Voit follows up
with a 3R HR. Snell still manages to K 2 hitters while going down 5-0.
5th: 1-2-3 for deGrom and Snell Ks 2 more.
Snell exits after the 5th having struck out 11 and given up 5 runs. Casey Mize enters as
relief and immediately gives up 3 more runs in the 6th. Mize stays in the rest of the way and
doesn't give up another run, saving the St. Louis pen for the rest of the series.
deGrom hit the wall himself in the top of the 8th, loading the bases before giving way to the
relief corps. Each of those runners scored in the 8th, making it 8-3 Stros and tarnishing
deGrom's line in an otherwise excellent performance.
The Cardinals tacked on another run, but the final would be: Astros 8 - Cardinals 4.
