Game 5: Royals (Junis) at A's (Straily, 11-8, 4.04)
The A's come back with the rubber-armed Straily, planning to piggyback him and Guerra (24
pitches in Game 3) to get some length out of the bullpen if necessary. They get a quick run
in the first on Rendon's run-scoring double before the Royals respond with back to back
doubles from Semien and Gomes in the second inning to tie it 1-1. In the bottom of the third,
Russell popped out before McCutchen grounded a harmless-looking single in the five-hole. Jose
Altuve then homered on the first pitch, making it 3-1 A's and bringing in Sam Gaviglio.
Conforto hit an 0-1 pitch for a double before Rendon jumped on the first pitch for a homer to
make it 5-1 -- not what Kansas City wanted on Gaviglio's first three pitches. From that point,
the long man keeps the A's in check in an elimination game until the bottom of the seventh,
when McCutchen and Altuve single and Conforto reaches on an error by first baseman Neil
Walker. Rendon promptly hits a game- and series-sealing grand slam to make it 9-1, and
Gaviglio is left in to endure the rest of the game, going 102 pitches in relief. The A's win
Game 5 9-1 and the ALDS, 4-1.
Series MVP would have to be Michael Conforto, who went 5-for-19 with three homers and five
RBIs.
Congratulations to Scott on reaching the ALCS. It was my great privilege -- and my deeply
satisfying and everlasting pleasure -- to help send his A's on to the next round of the
playoffs. -- David de la Fuente
