Houston Astros – Jose Quintana (11-9, 3.88 ERA) @ San Diego Padres – Rick Porcello (11-14,
4.39 ERA)
After squeezing the juice out of Minute Maid Park the Padres returned home with a 2-0 series
lead and looking to close things out. The Padres had some hits early once again but could
not take advantage after a great double play by the Astros in the 1st. San Diego would
however make it count in the 2nd with Lowrie and Marwin Gonzalez scoring as the Padres took
a 2-0 lead. This time it would be the Astros that would strike back right away when Benintendi
hit a homer with starting pitcher Quintana on base to tie things up. Solid pitching until the
bottom of the 5th when Cain scored after a Ramirez hit to make it 3-2 Padres but once again,
with their season on the line, Houston came out fighting. After two outs and two walks, Josh
Donaldson tripled deep and the Astros took the 4-3 lead after six innings. With time running
out and two outs in the bottom of the 8th, it was righty pitcher Jeremy Jeffress who would
shockingly help tie things up when he singled for David Peralta to score. 4-4 going into the
9th and Corey Knebel would make his first appearance of the series and shut down the Astros
in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 9th Kyle Crick would allow Span and Votto to
single and with runners on first and third, Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, Denard Span
scored and the series was over.
-- Kyle Crick took his second loss of the series after racking up 6 wins with a 1.72 ERA in
the regular season (harsh!);
-- Benintendi had the only homer of the series when he tied things up in the 2nd;
-- Star center-fielder Lorenzo Cain had 4 hits in the game but Ramirez was the hero with the
game and series clinching RBI.
Again, a huge thanks to Chris. Some tough luck from DMB in this series for the Astros for sure.
All the best for next season Houston and San Diego looks forward to going up against the
juggernaut from Philadelphia next!
