Game 3: Yu Darvish vs. Madison Bumgarner
This was an interesting matchup, featuring two pitchers going in opposite directions. Bumgarner
was the Game 7 hero for Montreal in the ALCS, while Darvish put up a 15-hit, 12 ER clunker in
Game 6 of the NLCS for each pitcher’s previous start. Obviously Greg was hoping for a bounce-back
performance from Darvish when he trotted him out to start Game 3. Unfortunately for Milwaukee,
Darvish picked up right where he left off.
Leonys Martin started off the game by lining a single to left-center. He advanced to second on a
wild pitch before scoring on a Todd Frazier single. The first inning ended without any further
damage as Frazier was caught stealing on the very next pitch. However, things really fell apart
for Milwaukee in an ugly, 8-run second inning! Chris Davis continued his inexplicable streak of
“timely” hitting by launching a home run to lead off the inning. Darvish recovered to retire the
next two batters and seemed in control before facing Ben Zobrist with 2-out and nobody on. Darvish
would get Zobrist to fly out to left to end the inning – but not before the Expos hit around and
scored 7 more runs on 4 singles, 3 walks and 1 HBP. It was quite the cringe-worthy inning, but
Greg left him in there to take the beating and preserve the bullpen for the next two games.
Darvish departed after throwing his second consecutive 140+ pitch start, and did complain of a
bit of forearm discomfort after the game… Brewers 4, Expos 13. Montreal leads 2-1.
