Game 3: Santana vs. Cobb
We’ve all had those nightmares. We show up to work in our underwear, forget to study
for the big test, AND have to rely on Ervin Santana in a must-win playoff game.
Exciting times. Mike Trout quickly led-off the scoring with a home run (his second in
as many games!) to give Seattle a 2-0 lead after 1. Santana didn’t allow any further
runs to score, but was quickly yanked after throwing only 51 pitches the next time the
Mariner offense threatened. In vintage Expos fashion, the Montreal bullpen strung
together 7 scoreless innings after Ervin came out. Alex Cobb was outstanding, but the
Expos were able to score twice to tie the game up and send it into extra innings. The
10th inning was three-up-three-down in both halves, but things got interesting in the
top of the 11th. Raphael Soriano came in to pitch and got Edwin Encarnacion to ground
out before things started to fall apart. The very next hitter should’ve grounded out
too, but 3B Martin Prado allowed Travis Snider to reach all the way to second base by
botching a routine groundball. A walk, strikeout, and then another walk advanced Snider
to third with two outs. By now the pressure must’ve been getting to Soriano, as he
uncorked a wild one, allowing the go-ahead run to score on the very first pitch! He
recovered to strike out Jemile Weeks, but by then the damage was done. Expos 3,
Mariners 2 (11). Seattle leads 2-1.
