Game 5 @PHI: Hughes gets the start for Philly on short rest against Wainwright.
Davis takes Wainwright deep again in the 2nd as Philly scores first for the fifth
game in a row. Rollins singles and then finagles his way around to third base on a
stolen base and a balk, but Wainwright strikes out the bottom of the order to
strand him there.
Milwaukee ties it up in the 5th as a safety squeeze from Tejada scores Saunders.
Everything is quiet until the 7th when Philly loads the bases with one out on three
singles, bringing Puig to the plate for the biggest AB of the series so far. Still
under 100 pitches and batting 3rd in the top of the 8th Wainwright waves off pitching
coach Moose Haas and Uecker in the dugout, as his lips could be seen to mouth "This
is what I'm here for" before cracking an evil smile. After taking a strike Puig gets a
ball left up in the zone and lifts it out to left field. The Philly fans erupt in
anticipation as Rollins sets himself on 3rd base and Cespedes sets up a few feet
behind the fly. Ball hits leather and it's off to the races as Uecker screams "Come
on Yo Yo!" and Rollins speeds home. It's an absolute rocket though and the crowd is
on the edge of their seats as Pena catches it and brings the tag down... out!
Wainwright jumps about 5 feet in the air and points out at Cespedes, who responds by
yelling "This is what I'M here for!" with a big grin.
Neither team scores in the 8th but Mauer leads off the 9th with yet another opposite
field double. Santana pokes a grounder to the right side that Utley can't quite finish,
Jepsen comes in and issues a walk to Cespedes to load the bases and here comes Stanton
again. Jepsen gets up 0-2 but can't quite put him away, as Stanton hits one hard to
right field that doesn't quite have the distance to make me love him again but is
enough to score Mauer for the go-ahead run. Three more hits score 3 more runs though as
the Brewers bat around. Anderson enters the game with a 4 run cushion and makes things
interesting as a couple of singles to Freese and Ellsbury and a triple by Puig bring
in 2 runs, but that's as close as it gets as Duffy comes in to strike out Moss and the
Brewers dugout erupts.
In the locker room afterwards manager Uecker addressed the team holding a 12 pack of
Milwaukee's Best. When asked why he had the beer, Bob said that he had sent Mr.
Belvedere to pick it up that afternoon and that it was meant to symbolize the 12 wins
needed to win the World Series. "I'm gonna chug one of these after every game we win.
And since tomorrow's an off day, someone get the stopwatch on me cause I'm gonna make
up for lost time and get the first three down right now!". The room exploded as Wainwright
and Price started a chant of "Chug the Beast!" and Ueck tipped his head back.
Chapman gets the win while Carrasco takes the loss. Back to Wisconsin for game 6 with the
Phillies in "must-win" mode.
