First of all, I want to point out that Thursday was Washington National's owner Shaun Wyman's
birthday. Hopefully he's shitfaced at a pub somewhere in Connecticut while I write this (or
at least passed-out at home after a successful night out.)
On paper, this matchup looked to be a tough one for the Nats. Washington had a formidable
offense (5th best in CFA) but one that relied on a "small ball" approach to scoring runs.
The Nationals lead the CFA in steals AND hits, as well as being second in walks, but were
second-to-last in home runs. They would be going up against a very formidable Expos defense
that led the CFA with a .252 batting average on balls in play. Montreal had won all four of
the final regular season matchups between these two teams, and 11 of 16 overall.
Game 1: Shields vs. Bumgarner
The Nats hitters crush lefties, and they were hoping to jump on Bumgarner early. They get 3
runs on 8 hits and 3 walks by the 6th inning, but manage only 2 more base runners the rest of
the game. The Expos took the lead in the third inning off a 3-run Todd Frazier home run and
never looked back. Nationals 3, Expos 6.
