The fans were not to be denied another thrilling ride in Game 6. A
back and forth saga would occur again, with both Game 2 starters
pitching well, and late into the game, again. Mr. Excitement, Jose
Reyes opened the game with a triple, and scored the game's first run
off of Vazquez on a Kent sac-fly (for his 87th rbi of the series).
Houston answered immediately, when Mike Lowell (finally) came through
with a 2-run shot off of Lackey in the bottom half.
In the top of the 3rd, the Tribe would come marching back. After
Lackey reached on a Napoli error, Reyes homered to opposite field
putting Cleveland ahead 3-2. It seemed like more runs were to come
after back to back hits by Hawpe and Kent put runners at 2nd and 3rd
with just 1 out. But Houston walked Fielder intentionally and got the
groundball DP they were looking for to end the rally. The game
remained 3-2 until the bottom of the 6th, when Hudson lead off with a
game-tying homer. In the 7th, the ‘Stros turned the tie into a lead
on a Wilson Betemit PH single scored Alex Rios from second, but the
lead was short lived. Cleveland immediately answered thanks to a
triple by Kent and sac fly by Casey Blake.
Houston got walks from Lowell and Stairs with 1 out in the 8th, and
Corey Hart delivered just his 3rd hit of the series at a crucial
time. His double scored one, and a Napoli sac fly gave the Astros a
crucial insurance run. With a two-run lead and a runner on with one
out, Springer entered the game with a chance to close out the World
Series. He immediately walked Garko before getting a fly ball to
right, putting runners on the corners with 2 outs. Hawpe would not be
denied, and as he doubled down the RF line the Houston front office
was trashing the luxury box in disgust. But in the typical fashion
for this series, the see-saw ride of emotion quickly shifted – this
time before the play was even over. Garko was thrown out at the plate
representing the tying run, to end this dramatic World Series.
Springer had somehow closed out a Houston 6-5 victory, and the players
rushed to home plate where Napoli fell to his knees clutching the ball
in his bare hand. Security forces could do nothing to stop the tidal
wave of fans rushing the field, all nearly in disbelief of the amazing
final game. Houston was on top of the world, winning its first World
Series in franchise history.
Congrats to Cleveland owner David de la Fuente for a great season and
even greater series. Honestly, how much would Fox pay to televise a
series like this??!!
