A rematch of the game one starters would occur in Game 5. Neither had
looked good in the opener, but this matchup was just the opposite.
McGowan faced the minimum through 6 innings - 18 up, 18 down - thanks
to two Cleveland DP's. Lowe was answering McGowan, and after 7 had
allowed just 4 hits and a walk. Lowe escaped trouble in the 3rd when
Jarrod SaltyMan was gunned down at the plate, preserving the 0-0 ball
game. In the 7th it was McGowan's turn to wriggle out of trouble,
when Lofton singled and stole 2nd to lead it off. A few walks later,
Houston had the bases loaded and 2 outs but reliever Matt Guerrier got
Corey Hart to bounce out to end the threat. Houston again got
something going in the 8th, when Greene hit a two out double and
Paulino walked, but this time it was Manny Delcarmen's turn to crush
the 'Stros hopes. Cleveland got a runner on 2nd with 1 out in the
8th, but Lowe got Jose Reyes to fly out and Fultz k'd Hawpe to send
the game to the 9th. Again Houston had multiple runners on, but
Delcarmen worked out of the jam. The 0-0 game lasted until the bottom
of the 10th, when Casey Blake opened with a double to right center off
Rivera and Mike Redmond hit a groundball with eyes to start the
scoring and end the game. The classy veteran Redmond was nearly
pounded into the ground by an endless fury of head smacks, and had
tears in his eyes during the post-game interview. The Jake was a-
rockin', and the series would head back to Houston.
