Game 2 was seemingly a must win for Houston, who had their stopper
Javy Vazquez on the hill. The first 3 innings flew by, with both
teams combining for 3 hits, including a solo shot by Cleveland's back
stop, Jarrod Saltalamachia (who is in serious need of a nickname).
Jeff Kent homered (yet again) to start the 4th, but Houston answered
in the bottom half. The Astros loaded the bases with none out, but
could only put one run on the board off Cleveland starter John
Lackey. In the 5th, the top of Houston's order continued to provide
all the offense the team could muster. Kenny Lofton and Orland Hudson
reached before Timo Perez singled in the tying run. The score was
tied for all of 3 minutes, when Brad Hawpe homered (yet again...is
this a theme here?) to start the 6th. Vazquez was lifted for a PH in
the bottom of the 7th, allowing 3 runs all on solo homers. A big Jeff
Kent miscue allowed PH Ryan Theriot to reach base via error, and hit,
out, and walk later, Houson had the bases loaded with 2 outs.
Cleveland brought in Jimmy Gobble, their left handed specialist,
forcing Houston to PH for lefty slugger Matt Stairs. On the ensuing
0-2 pitch, Ronnie Paulino stroked a groundball up the middle, scoring
2 runs and putting Houston ahead. In the bottom half, Houston used 4
relievers to hold the Tribe to one run (a Kent rbi single) and the
game was again tied. Mike Napoli opened the bottom of the 8th with a
double off of David Riske, and scored on an Alex Rios single with what
proved to be the winning run. Russ Springer threw a 1-2-3 ninth to
notch the win. Series tied, 1-1.
