Game 5: Salazar vs. Quintana
This was the very close, pivotal game that certainly had the feel of a series-deciding
showdown. Both starters brought their “A” game, and both exited allowing only a single
run apiece. The 1-1 tie was broken in the top of the 8th, when Brandon Crawford (who
else!?) smacked a clutch, solo home run off of fellow lefty Kevin Siegrist to give the
Expos a 1-run lead heading into the bottom of the 8th!
The bottom of the 8th… Where Detriot would lead off with Bogaerts-Goldschmidt-Morales.
Sound familiar? It should, as the inning started in eerily similar fashion to the Game 3
implosion. This time it’s Hector Rondon’s turn to ignite the inevitable Tiger rally.
So Bogaerts promptly smacks a single up the middle, and, wouldn’t you know it, Rondon is
injured on the play! Uehara is summoned to try to get Goldschmidt out. But Bogaerts – ever
intent on getting into scoring position – breaks for second at the wrong time, as Uehara
throws over to first, leaving the baserunner picked off! Except Davis – probably mad after
having to tag Bogaerts constantly on every throw over to first – hauls back and nails the
baserunner with the throw! The tying run is in scoring position with nobody out! Uehara
gets Goldschmidt to ground out, but the runner crosses over to third and the HOTTEST HITTER
IN THE SERIES comes to the plate!
Of course I walk Morales to set up the double-play, but then all the beer I’ve been drinking
starts to cloud my thinking. (Why, oh why must the playoffs be played so close to
Oktoberfest!?!?!?) I send in Javier Lopez to face the lefty Coghlan, only to find that Chris
promptly pinch hits the lefty-smashing Jake Smolinski for him. Of course he does, and I always
drink coffee before checking the radar too…
With the light-hitting Chris Stewart on deck, I elect to walk Smolinski setting up a force
at any base, but we all know what happens when you temp the Baseball Gods by intentionally
walking two hitters in a row. Blazek comes in, but Stewart smacks a groundball base hit up
the middle! We’re tied! Austin Jackson is kind enough to strike out to avert complete disaster,
but we go to the 9th tied at 2!
Siegrist stays in and strikes out Ben Zobrist before giving up an infield single to Franklin
“Suspicious Power Surge” Gutierrez. Franklin wore his track shoes for sure, because he really
legged that one out. That ended Siegrist’s day, and J.J. Hoover was sucked in to face the
force of nature known as Chris “Slugger” Davis. Davis turned on the second pitch he saw and
lined it down the right field line. It got into the corner. While Davis was leisurely strolling
to second, Gutierrez was FLYING around the bases, and was waved home! The relay man threw home
and there was a play at the plate… SAFE! Gutierrez just got in ahead of the throw. The Expos
lead 3-2, and win the game by the same score!
