Game 7: Billingsley vs Zambrano:
Could the home team actually win a game? How short of leash with each manager have?
Could the pen's survive the abuse? Many questions in game 7. But the main was who
could win? LA struck first as Tulo singled in Johnson who has singled and stolen 2b.
Billingsley settled down after that and shutout LA for next 3 frames. Meanwhile Big
Z was (if you can imagine) walking a tightrope. Walking 6 in 4 innings - but only
allowing *1* hit (a Pagan double). Leaving the bases loaded in both the 2nd and 3rd
innings. But the Reds could not cash in. And leaving the tying run on 3rd in the
bottom of the 4th by K'ing Blanco with 2 outs. In the 5th the Reds went to their
excellent pen and continued to shutdown LA. Meanwhile the Dodgers PH for Zambrano in
the 5th - rumors of numerous heart attacks in the stadium may have been a factor. But
the moved back-fired as Evan Meek, who had been so excellent since coming to LA from
Mets in mid-season trade, allowed his 3rd run of the series to tie it on a Roberts
single, tying it at 1-1. In the bottom of the 6 all the wheels were turning as LA got
2 on and PHing Cabrera SH them to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. But Farnsworth K'd Conrad
and Davis to leave it 1-1 and Dodgers ruing the missed chance. The Dodger pen shut
down the Reds for next 4 innings, allowing only 2 walks and a single. For the Reds,
Marshall came in and escaped a 2-on, 2-out 7th. But in 9th he allowed Rajai Davis a
leadoff triple with LA fans screaming. Marshall came back and K'd Johnson. After an
IW to McCann to setup the double play, Gallardo came in and walked Tulo to load the
bases. Bringing up Bautista. The kid got Joey Bats to dribble one in front of the
plate and nail Davis at home, but Jose beat the throw to first to keep hope alive.
But LA fans were tearing hair out. With 2-outs now, David Ross made LA history as
the former Red ripped a single just past a diving Patterson to plate McCann as LA
had a walk-off win (2-1) and the series 4-3. WP- Rivera (2-0), LP - Marshall (0-1)
Comments:
Incredible series. As always against Dave and his Reds. Real good team and manager.
Either team could have won this series. Frankly all 4 NL teams are tough. I think
any could beat the other in a 7g series. Have not looked at AL yet - so no slight
there. Atlanta will be tough. But kudo's to Dave. He was a tough opponent and fun
to play again. Some comments in chat window (as I remember, sure not 100%).
BS - "Got to send McCann, ANYBODY should score standing on that" (OF fielding high
fly, with 2 outs, and crashing against wall, and ball rolling out). DS - It's
MCCANN!!! BS - "Bengji Molina could score on that - 3-2 count, 2 outs. The ball
ROLLED away." DS - "Ah it was 3-2 and he was running wasn't it" - McCann was safe BTW.
BS - "ok. first you walk him, and now you hit steroid boy." DS - it was intentional!
(I'll let you guess who it was. He hit 2 HR's prev game).
Dave probably has some more. I will not print anything he said about Francisco
after game 4........
Series MVP:
Tough call here. Frankly I tempted to give to Price. If Dave had not pulled him in game
2 :) Game 6 was a gem. For LA all pitchers (except for Downs) were good some games, bad
others. For hitters there were 5 who were star for 2-3 games, and then quiet the others
(Ramirez, Davis, Ross, Bautista, Dunn). We're giving it to Joey Bats. He played 4
positions and was most constant. So Jose Bautista is the series MVP. Ignore either of
the David's muttering about a certain statue in LF........
Series Notes:
-- Reds actually out scored LA 31-30.
-- Game 7, Reds left 11 and Dodgers 13. Felt like Reds left more, but LA actually did.
-- Zambrano line in 2 starts: 9IP, 5H, 4ER, 12W, 12K. 1-0 4.00. hmmm 12.0 W9. Batting
.667/.750/.667. 3 RBI.
-- Price was best SP. Dave has some serious young SP talent - Price, Gallardo, Pineda.
Future looking up for Reds.
-- Ross had only 2 hits in 11 PA - but both were game winning singles.
-- Notable Reds performances (good) - Roberts (.455, 1.116 OPS, 5 RBIS), Encarnacion
(.455, 1.902 OPS, 3Hrs in 13 PA), Uribe (3 Hrs, 1.062 OPS). Price (1-0, 0.66 ERA), Entire
Reds pen except for Francisco.
-- Notable Reds performances (bad) - Santana (.083, 1 for 12). Votto (.250/.393/.364, only
1HR), C. Jones (3-17 no XBH). Billingsley (0-1, 8.00 ERA). Francisco - K'd 7 of 8 guys
he faced. But gave up 5H and 2 walks and 3ER in 2.2 IP.
-- Notable Dodgers performances (good) - Ramirez (1.243 OPS, 2HR, 4 RBI). R. Davis (3-6,
1.404 OPS. Should have played him more. but......), Denorfia (.409 BA in CF). Bautista
(1.002 OPS, 2 HR, 5 RBI). Downs (5g, 1.93 ERA. best RP for LA).
-- Notable Dodgers performances (bad) - Conrad (3-14, no XBA hit. 1 critical error). Tulo
(.214, .683 OPS. But some key hits and made at least 5 highlight plays per announcers).
